Armed police block off Arthur St at the Awamoa Rd end in Oamaru this afternoon after a domestic dispute caused an armed offenders call-out. Photo by David Bruce
The Dunedin Armed Offenders Squad and Oamaru police blocked off an South Hill street in Oamaru this afternoon for more than two hours after a man barricaded himself in a house and threatened to use a firearm on a young child and himself.

The Dunedin Armed Offenders' squad and a communications van was called out shortly after 2pm to assist Oamaru police at the incident in Arthur St, which ended peacefully at about 4.15pm when the man gave himself up and was taken to Oamaru police station to be interviewed.

About a dozen armed offenders officers, along with Oamaru police, some of whom were called back from duty in the Waitaki Valley for Labour weekend, and an ambulance were at the incident.

Arthur St was blocked off with police cars and road spikes at each end with Stuart St and Awamoa Rd.
