When Chris Amon is reunited with one of his old Formula One racing cars this weekend, there will be a strong Kurow connection.

Tony Green, from Applebys Garage, was involved with the Amon F101 in the United Kingdom before moving to Kurow in 2004.

It was built for Amon for the 1974 Formula One championship.

The car will be running at Hampton Downs, south of Auckland, as part of the New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing honouring Amon, and Mr Green was asked to look after it during its visit to New Zealand.

It will be Amon's first outing in the car in public for 35 years.

The car now belongs to Briton Ron Maydon.

The car, which is powered by Cosworth 3.0-litre DFV V8 developing 480 horsepower, will also be driven by another expatriate New Zealand Formula One driver, Howden Ganley.

The following weekend, the Amon car will go to the Ruapuna Race Circuit in Christchurch for the Skope Classic motor racing event, where Mr Green will demonstrate the car for the owner.

After that, the car will be prepared for racing by Mr Green, ready for departure to Europe to compete in historic events.

Mr Green, who is in the North Island with the car, was overwhelmed by the interest it generated.

It was "quite something" to see Amon, whom he called a very humble man, in the car and he was looking forward to a "stunning" weekend.
