Eden Bradfield (17), a year 13 pupil at Waitaki Boys High School, has been accepted to study for five months from January at Lilla Akademien School of Music in Sweden, under Stockholm-based violin teacher Hugo Ticiatti.
The invitation came after Eden impressed Mr Ticiatti when he met him last year.
Now, Eden faces the task of raising $20,000 to fund his studies in Sweden.
Already, he has raised about $1400 through donations and grants to a special account at Westpac Bank in Oamaru in a "Help Eden Get to Sweden" fund-raising campaign.
His big fund-raising push is a raffle and concert on Saturday, November 7, which will be held in the Waitaki Boys High School's auditorium.
He has also applied for grants from community organisations.
"It's a great opportunity and I want to make my own way."
Eden said the study would "open doors and connections" for him to pursue a career in music.
He wants to be based in New Zealand, but travel the world as a musician.
When Eden was 4 years old, he was part of the Music for Children programme in Oamaru and a teacher brought a violin to class.
Eden was fascinated by it, and he subsequently started learning the instrument.
He has continued with the violin, and is now lead in the Oamaru Youth Orchestra.
He also plays in the Diminium Chamber Trio, which comprises violin, cello and piano.
In January, he was at the Queenstown Violin Summer School.
He said meeting inter-national violinists there was an amazing experience.
The November 7 concert, at which the raffle will be drawn, features Eden, the Oamaru Youth Orchestra, Fenwick School choir, Oamaru Intermediate School choir, Cantores (Waitaki Boys small choir), the Diminium Chamber Trio, Alex Vaatstra and Charlotte Francis.
