Event planners sought

Organisers are being sought to plan the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the whaling settlement at Moeraki.

Moeraki was one of the first of the whaling settlements that became permanent European settlements in the South Island, Waihemo Community Board chairman Rod Philip said.

The settlement was established by six Europeans and six Maoris on Boxing Day 1836.

Whaling shore stations had been set up in New Zealand since the Dusky Sound whaling station was established in 1794.

A station was set up at Cloudy Bay, north of Kaikoura, in 1831.

Whaling began at Waikouaiti in 1837.

A monument was erected on the waterfront at Moeraki to mark the 100th anniversary of the Moeraki settlement in 1936.

A celebration was held at Moeraki to mark the 150th anniversary in 1986.

  • People interested in holding the 175th anniversary of Moeraki are asked to contact Mr Philip at Bushey, near Palmerston.
