Hold-up for Oamaru waste station

Establishing an Oamaru waste-disposal station for camper vans and caravans has been delayed while the Waitaki District Council works through issues with the facility's location and design.

Planned for Humber St, it would be the only free waste disposal station in Oamaru. Others can be used for a charge at camping grounds.

The council wanted the station installed by Christmas but that was now unlikely, roading assets manager Geoff Young said, because of issues over a resource consent, design and the location.

The council investigated several sites for the station and Humber St, just north of the Oamaru Railway Station, was selected.

The Humber St site was the cheapest and simplest to install, with the cost estimated at $9500.

It would be signposted from State Highway 1, with the added advantage it would draw tourists off the main highway and into the business area, historic precinct and Oamaru Harbour.
