The Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade rushed to a house fire on Lynn St, Oamaru, just before 11am today.
Senior Station Officer Peter Mason said two crews were sent to the address and four firefighters entered the building in breathing apparatus kits to look for people and to battle the blaze.
He said firefighters found the property's lounge was ''well involved'' in fire.
No-one was at home at the time, Mr Mason said.
The cause was unknown and the Fire Service was investigating.
The fire is now out, after crews spent an hour and a-half at the site.
The person believed to be the property's occupant refused to comment.
