Lockdown burnouts bring date in court

Police have slammed the ‘‘appalling’’ behaviour of man who crashed his vehicle doing burnouts in North Otago.

Oamaru police received seven calls from concerned members of the public regarding an unsafe car, before it was found doing burnouts, and crashed in Horse Gully Rd, Papakaio, near Oamaru, at 11pm on Tuesday.

A police spokeswoman said a 29-year-old Oamaru man was arrested, processed for drink-driving and recorded a breath-alcohol level of 873mcg.

The vehicle had no registration, warrant of fitness, seatbelts, or lights, the spokeswoman said. No injuries were reported.

The man was charged with drink-driving, dangerous driving and sustained loss of traction. He and his male passenger were also issued infringement notices for breaking Alert Level 4 lockdown rules.

The man is due to appear before the Oamaru District Court on September 8.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy, of Oamaru, said the man’s behaviour was ‘‘appalling’’.
