More spilling from lakes expected

Meridian Energy expects to be spilling water from South Island hydro-electricity generating lakes for the next few days.

Benmore was spilling 340cumecs on Saturday which had dropped to about 300cumecs yesterday and it was likely to stay around the 300 mark "for the coming day or so", external relations manager Claire Shaw said yesterday.

Tekapo was spilling at 45cumecs and it would be increased to allow for necessary work to be done on a transformer before dropping back to 45cumecs.

Pukaki remained at 200cumecs and the lake was not receding, which was being attributed to snow melt.
