New block damaged

Vandals have already damaged a new toilet and shelter block built by the Department of Conservation for campers at the Glencoe Domain.

The department has just completed the $100,000 project, improved access and landscaping the domain, about 3km inland from Herbert, because of its increasing popularity for holiday-makers and tourists in campervans.

However, some time this week, vandals attacked the new block, which Doc's North Otago ranger, Kevin Pearce, described as "a pain".

Doors to the toilets were kicked but not damaged, an attempt made to damage one of the hand basins and two of the toilet seats "trashed".

Mr Pearce suspects the incident took place some time between when he was there on Monday and yesterday.

The toilet block has now been locked until the toilet seats can be replaced, which could be difficult because they may have to be specially made.
