Christine Moffat is the new co-ordinator of the Presbyterian Support (Otago) buddy programme in North Otago.

The programme provides support and guidance for children aged between 4 and 12, through friendship with a trained adult buddy.

Mrs Moffat, who has taken over from Viv Laming, said she was delighted to have the role.

"As a mother of four children I realise that children need as many positive role models in their life as possible."

Some prospective little buddies had been on the waiting list for longer than six months, and 10 adult buddies were urgently needed in the North Otago area.

Activities undertaken in the past had included sports, baking and sending shoebox parcels to less fortunate children overseas.

Mrs Moffat said buddies went through a careful selection process and were given training before being matched with a little buddy.

One big buddy, who declined to be named, said being a buddy was its own reward.

"It is not onerous - for a couple of hours a week you can make quite a difference in a young person's life. The big buddy gets just as much out of it as the little buddy."

Mrs Moffat said adult buddies must be over the age of 20, couples were welcome and the minimum time commitment was usually around one year.

Anyone keen on becoming an adult buddy should contact Mrs Moffat on 027 662-1975.
