The Waitaki district is still below the maximum numbers of gambling venues and gaming machines - and is likely to remain that way, with no changes proposed to limits imposed by a Waitaki District Council gambling policy.
The council introduced a Gambling Venues (Class 4) Policy in 2004, reviewed it in 2007 and now has to carry out another triennial review.
However, in the latest review, it is proposing not to change its policy, although a final decision will not be made until March 8, after public submissions close on February 4 and it hears and considers those submissions.
Usually, a gaming policy review by any local authority attracts submissions from national organisations who, depending on their views, want either fewer or more machines.
The policy put out for public consultation allows up to one gambling venue per 1000 population.
Waitaki has capped that at a maximum of 20 venues. At present, there are 14.
The policy also limits the maximum number of gaming machines in the Waitaki district to 140. At present, there are 129.
Any new venues are limited to a maximum of nine machines, but an application can be made to operate more. The application is then considered with reference to several criteria.
Gambling machines are not allowed in premises incompatible with other predominant uses in a commercial or retail district.
Under the policy, gambling venues are not allowed within 100m of each other or in residential or recreational zones, unless they are at sporting venues or recreational, non-profit clubs.
