Up to 110cum of firewood is being created for a Waitaki Community Gardens Trust fundraiser as a 20-tonne digger, a 14-tonne digger, a firewood processor and a Walton Earthworks crew remove about 20 mature gum trees at the southwest boundary of the trust's Chelmer St site this week.

The trees are being removed to improve soil health, allow for future native planting on site, and allow the community gardens to expand.
