Liz Lilley, of Christchurch, with her Chevrolet V6 3.4-litre trike, was one of about 3000 motorcyclists who started riding into Waimate yesterday for the 29th annual March Hare rally, one of the biggest motorcycle events in New Zealand.

Organisers yesterday were expecting a bigger turnout at the Waimate Showgrounds than previous years, with the bulk of them arriving during today in time for the concert and events tonight.

The rally started as a small event at the Waihao Forks Hotel, organised by Kevin Farrell.

In the following years it grew in size as more people were invited, as well as in sophistication, with the addition of entertainment.

Six years ago it was taken over by the March Hare club, which shifted it to the Waimate Showgrounds so the town would get more benefits.

This year motorcyclists are coming from Kaitaia to Bluff, and even from Australia, for the event.
