The newly installed birth pool at the Oamaru Maternity Centre was officially opened yesterdayby Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean and Tom MacDonald from the Waiareka Valley Lions Club.
The Waiareka Valley Lions Club and the Oamaru Lions Club contributed $10,000 towards the project, with the Waitaki District Health Services Trust funding the rest.
Women in North Otago were appreciative of the maternity service and had expressed xcitement at "yet another wonderful tool" to support natural childbirth, midwife Jude Perniskie said.
Oamaru Hospital manager Robert Gonzales said the new pool would be very beneficial for women giving birth.
