The redevelopment of Waitaki Valley School is on track for the start of the new school year.

The school opened in 2004 on the Kurow Area School site following the merger of the Hakataramea Valley, Otematata and Kurow schools.

As it was previously an area school, many of the buildings were designed to suit the needs of secondary school pupils.

The main brick block, housing classrooms and the administration area, was built in 1940 and was outdated.

It has been replaced as part of a $3.9 million redevelopment.

Board of trustees chairman Michael Smith said the building "looks really good" and once landscaping had been completed, it would blend in with the landscape.

There was lots of natural light and space and good acoustics.

A formal opening would be held at a later date, he said.
