Hundreds of protesters protesting a planned 17% rates rise have marched to the centre of Omaru to present a petition to councillors.

A petition with over 5000 signatures calling for a previously agreed 22% rise to be replaced by a 7% increase was handed to mayor Mel Tavendale on the steps of the Waitaki District Council building.

Hundreds of residents were at Takaro Park for the protest action before heading to the council building.

Waitaki district councillors voted this week to pare back the 22% to 17%.
