A private quarry, owned by Kaka Point resident Geoff Kitto, on the Karoro Creek Rd, was the scene of the massive explosion, designed to create masses of rock that will be crushed and used to seal the Karoro Creek Rd, which is the gravel road that gives motorists and tourists a short cut between Owaka and Kaka Point.
Blackhead Quarries was in charge of the controlled explosion.
Driller Colin Bennet said preparations began last week, when the site was marked.
Drillers had been making holes, small, but as deep as 9m, to lay the explosives. In all, 122 separate 60kg packs of dynamite were carefully lowered into the ground.
Crushing of the newly formed rock is expected to start within days, in preparation for the sealing.
