The youngest freemason leader in 138 years of freemasonry in the East Otago town has been installed at Palmerston’s Masonic Lodge.

Aaron Johnston (26), of Palmerston, pictured third from left with fellow freemasons, from left, his uncle, Gary Johnston; father, Stewart Johnston; and grandfather Noel Sheat, was inducted as the youngest "Worshipful Master" of the lodge earlier this month.

Mr Johnston said he knew of another member who was inducted as master of the lodge at 29, and believed he was the youngest to be installed in Palmerston.

As master, he aimed to increase the 25-strong membership of the lodge, do more charity work, and  encourage more people around his age group from the Palmerston area to join.

The lodge building in Auskerry St, Palmerston, also needed to be upgraded, he said.
