A German man required stitches to his upper lip after he was assaulted in the McDonald's restaurant in Camp St yesterday at 12.15am.
Sergeant Blair Duffy, of Queenstown, said two men, who were believed to speak in Scottish and English accents, punched the German then fled in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack.
The victim was taken to Lakes District Hospital for treatment and stayed overnight.
Police were reviewing security camera footage and inquiries were continuing, Sgt Duffy said.
