Snowsports chance for disabled

In a bid to make snowsports accessible to everyone, the Remarkables will host an Adaptive Programme open day on September 5.

Through the programme, anyone who has a disability is able to register for the open day, which offers the thrill of the snow, a free lift pass, equipment rental, lesson and volunteer support - regardless of the disability.

A 50% discount would also be offered on lift passes or tubing for immediate family members or full-time caregivers of the participants.

The Remarkables Adaptive Programme co-ordinator Ross James said it would be an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the snow.

"We have a great programme here at the Remarkables, allowing people with all types of disability to safely experience the joy of snowsports.

"Whether it's a visual, intellectual or physical disability, we can assist anyone to get out on to the slopes, and see how fun it is to truly feel the freedom of the mountain.

"We have instructors specially trained to teach the programme, and top-of-the-range equipment and techniques to help everyone.

"We're looking forward to welcoming future snowsports enthusiasts, their families and their caregivers to the Remarkables for a fun and exciting day in the mountains."

Due to limitations on the amount of available equipment for the open day, priority would be given to people from the Wakatipu, Southland and Cromwell areas who were trying an on-snow experience for the first time.

People must register in advance to receive the most appropriate support and maximum fun from the day.
