Border officials at Christchurch Airport have picked up a British man suspected be involved in a Queenstown assault.

The 28-year-old would appear in the Christchurch District Court this morning charged with assault.

Sergeant Blair Duffy, of Queenstown, said the incident involving a woman happened outside Devil Burger in Church St at 2.40am on Wednesday.

"He [allegedly] punched her in the face once," Sgt Duffy said.

"She did suffer injuries to the mouth - a cut lip and bleeding."
