South Canterbury softball players Cooper White and Carmichael Gamblin have been busy representing New Zealand at the Mike Stapleton Memorial Tournament in Prague.

The International Softball Academy exposes youth players to elite softball at an international level, sending New Zealand players overseas to compete.

New Zealand U17 boy’s team finished fourth at the tournament.

It was a great experience for both boys.

Carmichael was at catcher and the outfield, Cooper played the outfield and third base — a new position for him and one he really enjoyed.

Cooper also trained as a relief pitcher and was grateful for the extra coaching he received.

Cooper will share the skills he has gained with fellow team-mates when he plays for the U19 boys’ team this season.

The team will be playing in the local senior competition as they prepare for the U19 nationals in January.

The senior competition begins, for the 2025-26 season, at Sir Basil Arthur Park on Friday, October 3 at 6.15pm with eight teams registered.

The junior competition starts at 4.15pm on Friday, October 17.

Slow Pitch, which is a social game of softball, starts on Tuesday, October 7 at 6pm and entries are still open.

If any sports group, business or just a group of friends want to join please contact Chris McConnochie on 021-303-339.
