The South Canterbury Anniversary Kia Toa triples were played at Kia Toa bowling green at the weekend.

A strong field of 20 teams played for the Dinga Bell memorial trophy.

Ronald Bell — known as Dinga Bell — was well-known throughout New Zealand for his impressive bowling career.

Dinga was a representative bowler for a number of years and won 14 South Canterbury titles.

The Bell family donated the trophy for Dinga who died six years ago.

The tournament has been going for six years and the West End combination of Dave Carey, Dave Kitchen and Malcolm Walker won the trophy the first three years.

On Saturday entrants played to qualify for two divisions.

The top division played for the Dinga Bell trophy and the bottom division played for bragging rights.

On Sunday, the top 10 teams played and everyone was knocking each other over and after three rounds there was only one team with three wins from three games, which was Brodie Devine, Richie Kerr and Jimmy Vevers.

In the last game they played Trev Cloughley, who was South Canterbury's most consistent bowler last year, teamed up with Davey Carey and Paul Brohan, but an impressive display from Devine's team outclassed Cloughley’s team with a magical game of bowls to win the trophy.

In the bragging division, Des Shea's team of Ants Foley and Michael Leonard were the only three-game winner after the third and proved too strong in a hard-fought game against Jason Rhodes’ team of Alphy Trevathan and Dion Glennie.

Division 1: 1st Brodie Devine, Richie Kerr, Jimmy Vevers four wins, 31 ends; 2nd Bob Smith, Chris Dawson, Bruce Scott three wins, 29 ends; 3rd Merv Davey, Mick Ross, Hans Winkleman two wins, 25 ends.

Bragging Division: 1st Des Shea, Mike Leonard, Ants Foley four wins, 31 ends; 2nd Grant Shaw, Jacques Volchenkov, Darryl Fowler three wins, 31 ends; 3rd Lenny Luke, Warren Garrick, John Rankin three wins, 25 ends.
