Medical trust meeting fiery

Strong statements hurled from the floor were shut down by groans from other people attending the High Country Medical Trust's annual meeting in Twizel last night.

Members of the Twizel community gathered at the Mackenzie Country Inn to nominate new trustees and 15 people stood, a marked increase on previous years, encouraged by trust chairman Simon Williamson.

The trust oversees the Twizel Medical Centre board, but the centre came under fire last year over the handling of a staff issue that resulted in the ending of one of its general practitioner's contracts.

A community group was formed in a bid to upend the board and the police later became involved and issued notices to several people to cease what was deemed online harassment.

From the start of last night's meeting, Mr Williamson worked to keep the meeting on track, answering several questions from the floor. As he tried to move the meeting along he was met by jeers from some but cheers from others.

Scott Aronsen, a member of High Country Health in the mid 2000s, stood again for a position and promised to request the trust's financial paperwork in a bid to promote greater transparency.

Omarama resident Charlotte Cook, who was willing to be nominated, spoke about wanting to promote the health centre and make sure patients felt they were getting top service.

Sitting trustee Tony Delaney spoke about his work with the trust and what it was like to be a member.

The understanding of what could and should be presented at the meeting was debated, with three people bringing up points.

They spoke about wanting to see details of the trust's accounts, questioned the status of the trust, and how trustees were presented on the Charities Services website.

But most in the audience grew tired of the debate, with people telling others to ``shut up'' and stating ``this is not a union meeting''.

Not a Union Meeting. Caught on quick. Those who profess to be anti collective are forever going to trust/shareholder/public meetings, or working collectively. How do they do it?
