Shooting incident prompts lockdown

A precautionary security lockdown of Timaru Hospital yesterday afternoon followed the admission on Sunday of a 26-year-old Oamaru man who had been shot in the thigh that day.

Less than two hours after the first shooting, a shot had been fired at a house, also in South Canterbury, while two people were inside it.

Yesterday's lockdown came at 3.30pm, on police advice, and was earlier than the usual night lockdown of the hospital, a police spokeswoman said.

Circumstances surrounding the earlier shooting remained unclear, and police were ``not entirely sure what happened''.

Police were continuing their inquiries and matters involving the hospital would be further reviewed today. .

A police spokeswoman said the wounded man was driven to the emergency department by a friend, about 4.30pm on Sunday.

Police want to speak to Timaru man Samuel Aaron Selwyn Hix about the incident.

About an hour after the first incident, police were called to a house in Kennels Rd, Washdyke, north of Timaru, after reports a shot had been fired at a house.

Two people, a man and a child it was reported, were in the house but were not hurt.
