As we age, we may choose to drive less or need to transition away from driving altogether.

Age Concern New Zealand recognises this can be a significant life change and offers a practical resource called Life Without a Car.

The resource is designed to support people in maintaining independence, social connection, and continuing to do the things they enjoy.

The Life Without a Car booklet offers guidance for those who are considering driving less or have stopped driving.

It provides useful insights into alternative transport options, including community services, public transport, and driving services.

The resource also addresses how to manage everyday tasks — like attending medical appointments, shopping, and staying socially active — without relying on a personal vehicle.

The booklet is part of Age Concern New Zealand’s information resources that supports older adults, their family, and communities to have positive choices to age well.

Chief executive Karen Billings-Jensen said reducing or stopping driving did not need to limit people’s lifestyles and choices.

"We encourage people to plan ahead and talk with their family and friends about their ideas."

The booklet is available online or in hard copy from locally-based Age Concerns.

Age Concerns also offer a driver education programme funded with NZTA, which includes the Staying Safe refresher courses for older drivers.

Whether you’re preparing for life without a car or supporting someone who is, this resource is a helpful guide to staying mobile, connected, and confident.

The booklet includes information on public transport options, taxi and companion driving services, ride share options, and community transport options such as health shuttles and community vehicles.

It also provides helpful information about musing mobility scooters, "power chair" wheelchairs, and how to safely get around on foot or on a bicycle or e-bike.

■ Free off-peak public transport is available for SuperGold card holders. For most of the country, off-peak hours are:

● Between 9am and 3pm on weekdays.

● From 6.30pm to the end of service on weekdays.

● Any time at weekends and on public holidays.
