Balclutha has a new cosy and relaxed movie theatre which will be showing its first movie this weekend.

The first film to be shown on the pull-down screen at the South Otago Theatrical Society's clubrooms in George St, at 2.30pm on Saturday, will be Disney's Frozen.

South Otago Theatrical Society member Sarah Van Asperen said the idea for a movie theatre in Balclutha came about a few years ago and the group never let it go.

The feature will be displayed at the group's clubrooms in George St.

Children were encouraged to dress for the occasion.

Mrs Van Asperen did not know what people expected to pay for the screening and was asking only for a cash donation.

‘‘We want to make it affordable for kids' and adults' entertainment.''

She said the society planned on more films once it was running successfully.

She expected the society would put on at least one screening per month.

The first film was directed at children but hoped to have films for a mature audience in the future.

This gave the clubrooms a purpose instead of leaving it empty between theatre productions.

‘‘It's a cosy relaxed-style movie theatre in Clutha,'' she said.

Mrs Van Asperen wanted feedback from the public as to what films they wanted to watch.

The group needed to apply for a licence to screen the films and this took time, so the sooner she knew what to choose, the better.
