One of Allied Press’ own was a winner at the weekend when Clutha Leader  and Otago Daily Times reporter Evelyn Thorn was crowned the South Otago A&P Show Queen.

Miss Thorn said she only entered the pageant after writing a story about the competition having low entry numbers.

"I had seen them when I was growing up and I joked about doing it last year.

"I wasn’t too sure about it.

"When I did the preview article about them needing contestants, I thought screw it, why not."

The 21-year-old said she did not expect to win. Rather, she was there to make up numbers and have some fun.

"I didn’t think I would win at all.

"It was actually a really cool experience, to be fair.

"I was really thrilled to win something, if not the entire thing. I was quite chuffed."

Miss Thorn won the Miss Public Speaker and the Face Body and Beauty Miss Radiance categories, before being named the 2023 Show Queen.

Other award winners were Emmily Meehan (Miss Photogenic), Shonny Stratford (Miss Personal Development), Lilly Gooch (Miss Friendship), Hannah Hogg (2nd Princess), and Hebe Juan (1st Princess).
