Making sure the Catlins Coast Rally is a smooth ride for drivers is a time-consuming job but the course clerk keeping an eye on the roads says he enjoys the job thanks to the people in the area.

The Catlins Coast Rally will be held on August 6 and clerk of the course Craig Jessop, of Stirling, said the overall responsibility fell on his shoulders.

He had to ensure the correct rules and procedures were followed.

"On the day, I'm the boss.''

One thing that would make running the rally easier was a new satellite tracking system which meant organisers could keep an eye on where all the vehicles were.

Mr Jessop has been a clerk of the course for "about 10 years'' but has helped organise other rallies for almost two decades, as part of the Eastern Southland Car Club.

The role could be time consuming which could be a burden, he said.

"For about three months out from the rally, it pretty much takes over your life.''

Mr Jessop said the group organising the event tried to use as many local services as possible so money raised could go back to the area.

Rally secretary Roger Laird said some of the volunteer groups involved the local scouts and the search and rescue team. More than 130 volunteers would be involved in running the rally.

In the event, 91 crews will tackle 122km of high-speed special stages on gravel road around the Owaka area, linked by 102km of touring stages.
