Freedom campers not a major issue

Freedom campers appear to be behaving themselves in the Clutha district so far this year.

Clutha District Council regulatory group manager David Campbell said the council had received no complaints yet about issues related to freedom camping in the Catlins or elsewhere in the district.

Freedom camping was not allowed in any urban area of the Clutha district or in areas signposted ''no freedom camping''. It was allowed only in self-contained units on public land controlled by the council.

Using their limited powers, the council's elected freedom camping officers had generally managed to move on people violating the rules, Mr Campbell said.

''The main difficulty we have is around limited signage when people are staying in areas without 'no camping' signs.''

This made it harder to move people on, though it mainly happened on private land.

Clutha's freedom camping bylaw was due to be reviewed by the council this year.

Whether the council installed systems similar to those introduced by Dunedin City Council at its Warrington Domain and Ocean View reserve sites would be considered as part of the review.

Department of Conservation acting operations manager John McCarroll said the department had not received any complaints related to freedom camping in the Catlins either.

Mr Campbell advised anyone concerned with freedom campers to notify the council through its customer service request system.

The council was also surveying freedom campers in the district to help spread information about the upcoming bylaw review.

A spokeswoman for the Southland District Council said there had been no reports of any problems in the area up to January 2.

Part of the southern Catlins area is included in the Southland district.
