Full backing for liquor ban

A liquor ban has been confirmed for central parts of Balclutha and Milton.

The Clutha District Council this week unanimously approved the liquor bylaw, which will prohibit the possession and consumption of alcohol in most of Balclutha's main street and key parts of Milton too.

Planning and environment manager Murray Brass said signage and the like would need to be arranged before the bylaw takes effect on July 1.

He also said police would take an educational approach for the first few weeks and months of the bylaw.

Resignation: Long-serving Balclutha children's librarian Joyce Nelson has resigned after nearly 30 years' service to the council and its predecessors.

Chief executive Charles Hakkaart said Mrs Nelson had served several generations of Clutha residents and her promotion of children's reading "leaves a legacy here that she can be proud of".

She had been a loyal and dedicated worker and the council was sorry to lose her skills and experience.

Water use: The council has tightened up the rules over unauthorised water use so anyone illegally taking water from its schemes over long periods can be punished for the exact period of time they have been breaking the rules.

Bursary: Just one application was received for the 2008 Telford Rural Polytechnic bursary, although councillors who interviewed Alan Dirven said he was an exceptional candidate.

Mr Dirven received $1500 to help with his study costs.

Telford has decided to include the bursary forms in its student information packs distributed throughout the country.

Speed limits: A busy stretch of road just north of Waihola will have a 70kmh speed limit imposed on it, despite some draft annual plan submissions calling for the section to be made a 50kmh zone.

Councillors were told the present Land Transport New Zealand formulas did not allow anything lower than a 70kmh limit.

Mayor Juno Hayes said that should not stop the council from trying to get rules and regulations changed to better reflect the needs of communities.
