Health services have good year

The two Lawrence groups which take care of local health services are in good shape after their annual financial checkup.

The Tuapeka Community Health Company and Tuapeka Health Inc both reported better operating surpluses for the year ending June 30, 2008, their joint annual meeting was told.

Tuapeka Health Incorporated recorded a net $40,913 surplus, up about $5000 on the previous year.

Chairman Murray Paterson said there had been very little capital expenditure in the past year, although a home ventilation system was installed in the doctor's house. The doctor's residence and rest-home kitchen are to be upgraded soon.

Meanwhile, the community company banked a net surplus of $118,651 - nearly three times the profit in the 2007 year. Income from its general practice was the biggest contributor, while interest earnings of $44,000 also made a difference.

"This, along with careful spending, has now put us in a position to replace some of the expensive equipment, some of which is starting to show its age."

The rest-home continues to operate well and Mr Paterson said staff should be proud to be part of such a well organised and managed facility. He also paid tribute to Dr Leon Dittrich, health centre staff and outgoing health centre manager Jill Wallace.
