Playcentre has new home

A new playcentre building for the Clutha Valley area has arrived, signalling the start of a new base for early childhood education in the area.

Just weeks after a primary school was opened in the area, Clutha Valley Playcentre president Susie Roy confirmed her group took delivery of the prefabricated building from Dunedin and it was now on the site next to the school.

The Government is providing the building free of charge and the playcentre group gets to use its $372,000 Crown grant to renovate it for use later this year.

Piles were placed on the site and the building now rested on the parcel of land which ‘‘makes it real'' for everyone involved in the project, she said.

Mrs Roy said the renovations would mainly focus on extending a playing area and improving facilities.

The government money will also be used for landscaping and other improvements to the site.

The group was working towards a June 1 opening but this would depend on several factors, many of which were beyond its control.

The group had been taking children to Balclutha since late last year, but that would stop once the first frosts arrived, she said.
