Event convener Stephen Green said it was a record turnout for the 20th annual event, which comprises off-road run, walk and bike categories taking in forestry and coast about 35km south of Dunedin.
"We’ve got a capacity crowd of 500 taking part this year, including a couple who also took part in our inaugural event in 2003.
"Although conditions aren’t great for spectators today, they’re near ideal for competing, so we’re very pleased with the way things have shaped up."
Mr Green said race organisers would hold a special celebration for the 21st anniversary next year.
New this year was a gravel bike category, which was well-subscribed.
"As always, we’ve got plenty of kids and families taking part as well as some top athletes warming up for the summer."
