Two separate crashes on Owaka Highway

An icy stretch of highway near Balclutha resulted in two crashes in the early hours of this morning.

A police spokeswoman said they were called at 4.12am after a car crashed into a ditch in the Owaka Highway, between Balclutha's High St and Finegand Township Rd.

The driver was uninjured and was not trapped, but a tow truck was required to remove the vehicle, she said.

About an hour and a half later, two cars collided near the scene of the first crash at 5.40am. No one was injured but a tow truck was again required to remove the cars, one of which was in a ditch.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Andrew Norris said crews attended both crashes but were not required to free anyone from their vehicles.

Shortly after the second crash a grit truck was deployed to sort out the icy section of the Owaka Highway running alongside the Clutha River.
