Car park possible dump site

Mataura's Coster Park is being considered as a potential campervan dump station site.

The dump station was one of the agenda items at the town’s community board meeting last week.

Installing a dump station was discussed at the board’s June meeting and, Gore District Council roading manager Murray Hasler was asked to investigate the possibility.

Mr Hasler presented a report to the meeting informing members about what he had discovered.

In the report, Mr Hasler noted the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) committee members responded positively to his questions.

"The comments received from the committee members [were] very favourable and the committee congratulated the community board and the council for the initiative. "

If the site met NZMCA criteria, it would contribute $1200 toward the cost of the pre-cast dump station unit, and signage valued at $1200.

"It is expected that the full cost of constructing facility will be approximately $20,000 (rough order of costs).

"No funding is currently allocated to this project," Mr Hasler said in the report.

During the discussion, board member Linda Sinclair said there were "massive potholes" in the Coster Park area, which at present is used as a car park.

She suggested if campervans were using the park, the area would need better maintenance.

Board member Greg Chaffey said siting the station at Coster Park seemed to "tick all the boxes".

Cr Neville Phillips said he could not understand why the dump station would cost so much when there were existing grey water facilities nearby.

He also questioned why it would be the board’s responsibility to find funding for the project.

He suggested council staff could investigate funding options.

"It’s an asset to the council. It is not an asset to the community.

"It brings in campervans ... into our district."

Board members agreed to inspect the Coster Park, with Mr Hasler to decide on the best place for the dump station and for council staff to look at possible funding sources.
