Crank Up back for big weekend of whirring wheels

It is full steam ahead in Edendale this weekend for the 35th Annual Crank Up event.

The event is hosted by the Edendale Vintage Machinery Club, and convener Ken Bell was at the Edendale Recreation Grounds yesterday as the tractors and trucks rumbled to their positions.

The Crank Up was off to a rolling start last night with a street parade, and will continue today and tomorrow from 10am.

"There’s something here really for everybody," Mr Bell said.

While Crank Up had started off as a vintage machinery show, it had become "a whole lot more than that".

There was children’s entertainment, craft stalls and food trucks.

"We have all types of machinery on display. There’s a lot of reminiscing goes on ... they remember ‘granddad had one of those’."

Each year different brands of vehicles were celebrated, and this year it was 50 years of Mack trucks being assembled in New Zealand, as well as 100 years of Kenworth trucks and an anniversary for Chevrolet.

The 120th anniversary of the International Harvester was also being celebrated; it was originally planned for last year, but the event could not go ahead due to Covid-19 restrictions, Mr Bell said.

"So we rolled last year’s event over to this year."

He was glad to be able to host the event again.

"I’ve got a good feeling about the event because I think people might want to get out there and get entertained."

About 6000-7000 people normally attended, he said.

As there was a total fire ban in place, so he encouraged attendees to be vigilant and not drop cigarette butts.

Entry is $20 for adults and free for children under 16.
