It was a time for reflection yesterday at the final Southland District Council meeting for the triennium.

Councillor Gavin Mcpherson, who is not seeking re-election, said he had attended 1355 council meetings since being elected 12 years ago.

"Having not given much thought all my life to the process of local government, I was slightly surprised when a friend of mine suggested I put my name forward ... I did also manage to get myself on every committee and I don't regret that at all," he said.

Cr Stuart Baird, who was unable to attend the meeting, is also not seeking re-election.

The council also addressed a report on the structural issues at the Holt Park camping ground.

Community facilities manager Mark Day said what was initially an upgrade had become a demolition project.

"It was a project to upgrade the camping ground with a budget of $228,000, but during the pre-construction phase of this we found there was some structural issues with the building," Mr Day said.

A structural engineer assessed the building and deemed it a health and safety risk, he said.

The council agreed to go ahead with the demolition of the camping ground building.
