The girls 1st XI cricket teams from Blue Mountain College and Gore High School celebrated the last rites of summer in Gore on Wednesday.
The game was as tight and as competitive as they come, with the result decided on the final ball.
Set 105 to win by Blue Mountain College, the Gore High School girls needed one to tie and two to win off the last ball of the game, but were unable to achieve it, with the win going to Blue Mountain College by one run.
Gore High School coach Les Morton said it was one of the best games of cricket he had ever seen.
‘‘My girls just fielded out of their skins. They played really well, but just couldn't quite make it in the end.''
‘‘It was a close game, which is always good, but it was the way it was played that was so pleasing.
‘‘The Blue Mountain girls are a great bunch, it was just excellent rivalry,'' Mr Morton said.
There were standout performances from both teams.
Kate Stiven starred for Blue Mountain College, scoring 44 in its innings and then taking four for 19, with the ball.
For Gore High School, Zoe Pullar scored 30 runs. Renee Sinclair, Caroline Morton and Tessa Ward, each snared three Blue Mountain College wickets for very little runs.
