One of main streets in Invercargill was partially closed after a school bus crashed into a SUV early this afternoon.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called at 1.10pm to Dee St in Avenal, on the corner of Gala St.

The SUV was hit on the driver's side and sustained a significant dent.

The two people in the SUV were unhurt, although a little shaken.

Police on the scene said the driver of the bus, which was carrying no passengers, had finished his lunch break and was getting ready to start the school pick-ups.

The north-bound lane was partially blocked and the bus stop was taken up by the damaged SUV.

The incident is the second one in Southland today involving a school bus, after one was driven into a ditch in the morning.
