One person is dead after a car came off the road and struck a power pole north of Winton early this morning.
Police said they were called to the scene about 12.45am on State Highway 96 (Winton - Wreys Bush Highway) about 14km north of the small Southland town.
"One person died at the scene."
Only one car was involved and the cause of the crash is being investigated, police said.
The road remains closed and diversions are in place.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area, if possible.
