A Greymouth-based detective has been appointed the new West Coast police area commander.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jacqui Corner replaces Inspector Mel Aitken, who recently moved to police national headquarters in Wellington on promotion.

Tasman police district commander Superintendent Mike Johnson made the announcement yesterday.

Snr Sgt Corner has been the detective senior sergeant at Greymouth since June 2016, and during this time relieved as area commander periodically.

She joined the police in 1999 and worked in Auckland in a range of CIB and general duties roles before coming to the West Coast two years ago. She was also deployed to the Solomon Islands in 2007.

"Jacqui has a genuine desire to see West Coast area police thrive, perform highly and continue to be an enjoyable place to work for all," Mr Johnson said.

"I look forward to her taking up the role in the near future and continuing the great work that is being done on the Coast to make our communities safer."

The appointment is provisional and subject to appeal. It is expected to be finalised in the next few weeks.
