Two large slips close West Coast highway

Two large slips have closed State Highway 6 on the West Coast this morning.

The slips occurred near Knights Point, between Fox Glacier and Haast, closing the main highway at the southern end of the West Coast.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has told motorists there is no detour available and they should plan their travel ahead.

NZTA is sending crews to the slips to assess the size of the slips.

"There are two separate slips. We're trying to clarify how many vehicles, if any, need helping out," NZTA spokeswoman Frances Adank told Stuff.

It has been raining in the area this morning and further rain is forecast today and over the next three days.
