Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull, with granddaughters Kaia (7) and Carli (2) Hutchinson, led the 200 swimmers into the St Clair beach at the city's annual Polar Plunge yesterday.

Hardy souls also took to the water for a midwinter swim at Kaka Point, while in Queenstown, the chilly waters of Lake Wakatipu provided a bracing landing area for participants in the Birdman competition.
