Concern over leg-hold traps

A worrying number of leg-hold traps found around Sandy Point is causing concern for the Invercargill City Council.

The council was alerted to the presence of leg-hold traps at the Sandy Point Domain by a member of the public on Tuesday.

A post on the council’s Facebook page yesterday indicated its disappointment "someone had placed a large number of leg-hold traps around Sandy Point".

Parks and recreation manager Caroline Rain said council park rangers had retrieved more than 100 leg-hold traps from the area since the incident was reported.

The incident had not been reported to police due to "trapping not [being considered] an illegal activity", but trapping was not permitted in recreation reserves. — Allied Media
