Wild weather uproots tree

An Invercargill resident was stunned by the size of a tree which fell at Queens Park because of high winds yesterday.

Sam Todd was walking through the park yesterday when she noticed the contractors in the area.

"I didn’t know exactly what was happening, but then I was walking closer."

"The massive tree" had "fallen down in the high winds and then it’s gone over into the pond", she said.

An Invercargill City Council spokeswoman said extremely high winds and wet weather over the past few days had caused the tree to fall in one of the most popular areas of the park — the duck pond.

"The tree is a big one — we reckon its root is about 6m wide.

"We believe due to the ground being extremely wet and soft, the rootball of the tree has unexpectedly been destabilised," she said.

Contractors worked in the area and the tree was expected to be removed today.
