Basketball: Paul's contribution recognised

Basketball stalwart John Paul was made a life member and presented with a special services award at Basketball Otago's awards evening on Thursday night.

Basketball Otago general manager Markham Brown said Paul had "made an overwhelming contribution to basketball" and it was only fitting that the organisation recognised his 50-plus years of service.

The night's other big winner was Otago Goldrush forward Casey Lockwood.

The Goldrush won the national tournament this season and Lockwood was instrumental in the team's success.

She was named the Goldrush's most valuable player and swingman Danielle Calnan was named the most improved.

Ethan Carruthers was named Otago under-12 most valuable player, with Damon Cleverley named most improved.

Thoughts now turn to this season, with Basketball Otago holding representative trials for the under-17, under-19 and under-21 teams tomorrow.
