Kiwi big man Jack Salt scored three points as Virginia beat Hampton 81-45 in their first match of the NCAA tournament this morning.

One of four No 1 seeds, Virginia entered the match as heavy favourites and were led by senior Anthony Gill, who scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to cruise through to the next round.

Salt entered the game late, going one-of-two from the foul line, before making a layup 30 seconds later.

Virginia will face 2010 and 2011 finalists' Butler in the next round, who beat Texas Tech 71-61.

In other results Duke saw off UNC Wilmington 93-85, Iowa State beat Iona 94-81 and 2014 national champions Connecticut came from behind to beat Colorado 74-67.

The NCAA tournament, also known as March Madness, sees 68 of the top teams in US college basketball compete in a knockout competition to determine the national champion.
