Impressive haul for Timmins

Sam Timmins’ massive night out against the Manawatu Jets has been upgraded from astonishing to epic.

The Otago Nuggets centre led his side to a thrilling 92-85 overtime win against the Jets in Palmerston North on Saturday with a colossal haul.

Initially, he was credited with 29 points, 25 rebounds and three assists.

But the statistics team had some initial difficulties and some of Timmins’ hard work was overlooked.

Upon review, the 23-year-old has been credited with two more rebounds and three more assists.

That means he ended up with 29 points, 27 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and a steal.

That is one full stats sheet. And to put a little more context around the achievement, Timmins left the court earlier during overtime with a knee complaint but returned to help secure the seven-point win.

It is not the first time this year he has kept the statistics team honest. In an earlier game against the Jets he got painfully close to recording a rare triple double. He registered 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

What elevates Timmins’ most recent effort is the number of rebounds he was able to haul in.

Only Miles Pearce (28 rebounds) has grabbed more in a game for the Nuggets and that was during a triple overtime thriller in 2006.

Tyrone Black is the only other Nuggets player to grab 20 or more rebounds in a game. He nabbed 22 against North Harbour in 1990.

Historically, Timmins’ achievement arguably sits alongside the likes of Glen Denham’s 50-point haul for the Nuggets in 1993 or Leonard King’s effort of 48 points later that season.

More recently, Mark Dickel dined out against the Canterbury Rams with 12 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds in 2014, while Troy Payne notched 17 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds against the Saints that year.
