The Otago Gold Rush has returned home from its North Island trip with two wins.

It emerged victorious in a low-scoring 49-46 struggle against the Taranaki Thunder on Saturday, having toppled the Capital Swish 83-71 on Friday night.

After leading 11-10 at the end of the first quarter against Taranaki, the Gold Rush held the host to six points in the second quarter.

Taranaki managed just three points in nearly nine minutes in that quarter, before a Jess Tuki three-point play just before halftime cut Otago’s lead to 25-16.

The Gold Rush extended that lead to 37-20 halfway through the third quarter, before its scoring dried up and the Thunder came roaring back.

Otago was  able to add only two more points in that quarter, but held a 39-27 lead at the final break.

Taranaki mounted a full-on comeback in the fourth quarter, briefly taking the lead at 44-43 with two minutes to play.

Soraya Umaga-Jensen gave the Gold Rush back the lead 40 seconds later, before the side did enough at the foul line to close out the win.

Nicole Ruske had 10 points for the Gold Rush, while Umaga-Jensen and Zoe Richards had eight each.

The win takes it to fourth place on the table, one point behind the Waikato Wizards and Waikato Country Cannons.

It next plays on June 24 in Dunedin against the top-of-the-table Canterbury Wildcats.
